10 Things You Can Do to Help Stop the Violence

ELIMINATE GUNS FROM YOUR HOME: Guns are 43 times more likely to be discharged in an accidental shooting, suicide or the commission of a crime than they are for the purpose of self-defense.

REPORT SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE to the police or the Department of Human Services. Nearly 8,000 children are reported abused or neglected DAILY. Three children will die today. Be their voice.

BECOME A MENTOR 1200 children will run away TODAY. Nothing is more effective in reducing violent crime than one-on-one counseling and care. Give an at-risk child 4-8 hours a week of your time.

START A STUDY-CIRCLE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. Invite interested neighbors to participate in informal discussions about crime and anti-crime resources in your own community.

VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME at a local youth organization. Coach a team, stuff envelopes, answer phones at a crisis hotline. Basically - get involved.

TALK TO KIDS in your neighborhood about their fears and concerns regarding their safety. Find out what resources are available to them, especially after school. Help create alternatives to fill idle time.

REACH OUT in friendship and support to a family facing problems in your neighborhood. Offer to baby-sit, do chores, provide transportation or just listen.

ORGANIZE A CLEAN UP in your neighborhood. Clear out or repurpose vacant lots; report abandoned cars, broken lights and traffic signals; paint over graffti

START OR JOIN A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH. Include children in your discussions about block safety. Make sure they know where to go if they feel threatened by violence.

DO A REALITY CHECK. Make a mental inventory of the ways that you yourself may be contributing to or supporting violence. Boycott TV shows, movies and products that promote violence.
